The Stillness…
It which the Narrator has a moment of reflection on his time in accidental captivity.
It’s an interesting narrative choice, one thinks that during the time the Narrator is cooped up with barking-mad-clergy guy there would be all sorts of action going on through out the rest of England. Clearly, something is up with this fast growing red week business.
But perhaps documenting destruction like some sort of errant western romance wasn’t of much interest to the author, too much rinse and repeat. Better to focus on what this ghastly situation does to the psyche of the individual? How thin the veneer of civilization is, disguising a ‘savage’ state just underneath?
This chapter and the next are pretty short, which is great because the chapter after that is really long. I’m going to need that time to break recordings into chunks or my vocal cords will stage a revolt. I have in mind stitching this whole mess together once all the episodes are done into one massive file for listening straight through. And then maybe another that’s just the ambient sounds with no narration at all. Like everything these days, we shall see.
